, a former infielder for the Oakland A’s and Boston Red Sox, has chosen free agency after playing for both the Red Sox and the New York Mets during the 2024 season. Reyes played a significant role for the Red Sox in 2023 after being traded from the A’s in May. During his time in Boston that season, he hit .287, had a .339 on-base percentage (OBP), and posted a .716 OPS across 64 games.
However, Reyes’ performance declined in 2024. The 31-year-old appeared in just 21 games for the Red Sox, batting .183 with a .234 OBP and a .451 OPS. After struggling in April, he was sent to the minors and then traded to the Mets for cash a few weeks later.
With the Mets’ minor league team, the Syracuse Mets, Reyes rebounded, hitting .290 with a .371 OBP and an .864 OPS over 63 games. His contract was selected on September 1, and although he only appeared as a pinch-runner that day, he contributed to a 2-0 Mets win. He was designated for assignment by the Mets on September 9 and returned to Syracuse without a plate appearance.
Reyes, who never played a game for the A’s despite being signed to a minor league deal in 2023, has been in the majors every year since 2018, except for the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Although he didn’t receive much opportunity with the A’s, the Red Sox gave him more playing time.
Now, after a difficult start to 2024, Reyes is seeking a new team that could benefit from his versatility as a depth piece across the infield.
