The Houston Texans have strengthened their defense by signing former Pro Bowl linebacker , known for his Super Bowl win with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. The Texans made this move following their Week 7 loss to the Green Bay Packers, aiming to bolster their already strong defense, which currently ranks second in the NFL, allowing only 277 yards per game. The addition of White is meant to enhance their depth, contributing to an already formidable defensive unit.
Devin White, 26, was the fifth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of LSU and spent five seasons with Tampa Bay. He played a key role in the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl LV victory, leading the team in tackles during the game.
However, White hasn’t played this season with the Philadelphia Eagles and will now take on a smaller role with Houston. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans expressed excitement about White’s arrival, stating, “We’ll work with him, see where he is, and try to get him caught up to speed.”
While the Texans are known for their high-powered offense led by 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year CJ Stroud, their defense has also impressed this season. They have recorded seven interceptions and 22 sacks, with linebacker Will Anderson Jr. being a standout performer, tallying 6.5 sacks so far.
Despite their loss to Green Bay, the Texans remain atop the AFC South and are strong contenders for the division title and possibly the Super Bowl. Head coach DeMeco Ryans acknowledged the team’s struggles in executing and finishing key plays, which contributed to the loss. He emphasized the need for improvement, stating, “We didn’t execute well enough… and we didn’t finish the game.” Nonetheless, the Texans look poised to continue their strong season with the addition of White.
