NHL insider Kevin Weekes recently gave a promising report after undergoing surgeries to address several core issues, indicating that early 2025 may be the new timeline. Kane’s comeback is much needed as the Oilers struggled to establish consistency in the early going of the 2024–25 season.
Kane’s absence has been noticed offensively and physically as the Oilers have struggled to a 2-4-1 start. Kane scored 24 goals the previous season and gave the Oilers a tough, muscular presence that they desperately need in the middle-six. Although the squad has suffered without him, it is hoped that Kane’s return will provide the lineup a much-needed boost and help the Oilers contend in the postseason.
Early talks assumed that the Oilers would coast into the playoff picture and then Kane’s return would be a huge addition in the postseason — almost like adding a deadline rental. He won’t help if Edmonton can’t find a way to turn things around, even if he returns two months earlier than anticipated.
