The Vancouver Canucks have announced that they have assigned defenseman Erik Brännström and left-winger Arshdeep Bains to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks. This move comes as part of the team’s ongoing efforts to fine-tune its roster for the 2024-25 NHL season.
Erik Brännström’s Role and Development
Brännström, a 24-year-old Swedish defenseman, was acquired by the Canucks during the 2024 offseason. Originally a first-round pick (15th overall) by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Draft, Brännström was known for his strong skating and offensive potential from the blue line. Over the past few seasons, he spent time with the Ottawa Senators, where he demonstrated flashes of his high potential but struggled to solidify a consistent role within the team.
Despite being a skilled puck-mover, Brännström’s development has been slower than expected, partly due to injuries and his need to refine his defensive game. His assignment to Abbotsford gives him a valuable opportunity to gain more playing time and continue working on his all-around game. The Canucks will likely monitor his progress closely, as his upside makes him a potential key contributor at the NHL level if he can unlock his full potential.
Arshdeep Bains’ Path
Arshdeep Bains, a local product hailing from Surrey, British Columbia, has become a fan favorite due to his journey from undrafted status to earning a contract with the Canucks. The 23-year-old forward made his professional debut with Abbotsford during the 2022-23 season after a standout career with the Red Deer Rebels in the WHL, where he led the league in points during his final junior campaign.
Known for his relentless work ethic and offensive creativity, Bains has shown flashes of NHL potential. He had a productive 2023-24 season in Abbotsford, where he continued to develop his game. His assignment back to the AHL is seen as an opportunity for Bains to take on a more prominent role, work on his consistency, and continue honing his skills in hopes of a future call-up to the Canucks’ NHL roster.
Building Depth
For Vancouver, assigning Brännström and Bains to the AHL is part of a broader strategy to ensure that the team has strong depth across all levels. Both players have the potential to contribute at the NHL level but require more development time to polish their games.
