Latest ASTROS News: Alex Bregman Finally Reveals Team He Wants To Join This Offseason

Rumors suggest two MLB teams might challenge the Houston Astros in signing Alex Bregman. Known for winning two World Series titles, a Silver Slugger, and two All-Star selections with the Astros, Bregman may have played his last game with Houston. Drafted as the second overall pick in 2015, Bregman has been a key contributor to the Astros’ success since his MLB debut in 2016. By 2018, he was a strong AL MVP candidate and a critical part of Houston’s lineup. Now, as he enters free agency, he’s drawing significant interest from other teams.

In 2023, Bregman had a rocky start, batting.219/.280/.372 with seven home runs in 236 plate appearances through May, and his struggles impacted both his stats and the Astros’ 23-32 record.

However, he rebounded from June onward, recording a .284/.337/.500 slash line with 19 home runs over 90 games, during which Houston improved to 54-36. His final 90-game stats even surpassed his season averages from 2022 and 2023, showing he’s still a valuable offensive player.

At 31 in March, this free agency opportunity is likely his last big contract. According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, while Houston wants to re-sign Bregman, they face financial limitations. The Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers are emerging as contenders for his signature. Detroit, recently ending a playoff drought, could be an appealing destination with manager A.J. Hinch, whom Bregman played under in Houston. In Toronto, Bregman could fill the gap left by Matt Chapman, who recently signed with the Giants, while also allowing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to stay at first base.
