The Winnipeg Jets have taken a heartfelt step to honor one of their long-serving players, Bryan Little, by signing him to a one-day contract before officially announcing his retirement from professional hockey. Little, who spent 13 seasons with the franchise, first with the Atlanta Thrashers and then with the Jets after their relocation, has been a fan favorite and a cornerstone for the team.
Little’s career was unfortunately cut short due to a head injury sustained in November 2019. In a game against the New Jersey Devils, he took a puck to the head, which led to a severe perforated eardrum and subsequent concussion symptoms. Despite undergoing surgery and months of rehabilitation, the lingering effects of the injury prevented him from making a return to the ice. The one-day contract is a symbolic gesture by the Jets organization to allow Little to officially retire as a member of the franchise he dedicated most of his career to.
Throughout his time with the team, Little established himself as one of the Jets’ most reliable forwards, known for his skill, consistency, and leadership on and off the ice. Drafted 12th overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, he quickly became an essential part of the lineup. His adaptability allowed him to play in various roles, and his performance often spoke louder than words. In 843 NHL games, Little accumulated 521 points with 217 goals and 304 assists, making a lasting mark on the team’s all-time leaderboard.
Beyond the stats, Little’s contributions to the Winnipeg community and the impact he had in the locker room were invaluable. Teammates and coaches alike have often praised his quiet leadership, work ethic, and commitment to the game, describing him as a player who always put the team first. Known for his humility, he was never the loudest in the room but was a constant source of stability and reliability. His connection with Winnipeg fans, who have supported him through his highs and lows, has remained strong, with many expressing appreciation and fond memories upon news of his retirement.
Jets General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff released a statement reflecting the organization’s gratitude toward Little, stating, “Bryan Little will always be a part of the Jets family. He exemplified what it means to be a Winnipeg Jet through his dedication, resilience, and humility. We’re honored to welcome him back in this special way as he closes this chapter.”
As Little moves forward, he leaves behind a legacy defined not only by his skill but by his character. His journey with the Jets will be remembered by fans, teammates, and the Winnipeg community, all of whom are grateful for his dedication to the team.
