Alabama football gets to rest this week, but it has a daunting task next week.
Kalen DeBoer will travel to an environment like none other in the Southeastern Conference and college football.
As a rookie head coach, he will guide the Crimson Tide into Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Alabama wants to stay healthy going into what is likely to be another elimination game in the College Football Playoffs. Coach DeBoer was in Birmingham, Alabama, on Monday for the Monday Morning Quarterback event. He spoke with the local media about a number of topics, including the health of a wide receiver in his second season. A lower body injury forced redshirt freshman Cole Adams to leave the game against Missouri.
Following an injury, he was observed walking on crutches out of Saban Field. Adams is emerging as a key member of the wide receiver rotation after previously being a four-star in Alabama’s 2023 recruiting class. In addition, he is the starting punt returner for the Crimson Tide. Adams has 11 punt returns for 58 yards and six catches for 94 yards. At the occasion, DeBoer claimed to have no updates on Adams.
Regarding an update on Adams, DeBoer stated that it would most likely happen later today. On punt return, true freshmen Ryan Williams and Jaylen Mbakwe serve as instant backups. On the depth chart, Mbakwe is ranked second, behind Adams, while Williams is ranked third. Mbakwe has one return while Williams has four punt returns. DeBoer stated that he has faith in Mbakwe and Williams to manage special teams.
Bak (Jaylen Mbakwe) was the first guy we threw out there,” DeBoer said. “Sometimes, we just look at the situation. Are we looking to just get the ball caught or are we looking for an explosive play? We look at who seems comfortable back there and what has the week been like for those guys in terms of consistency. We are comfortable with both of those guys.”
We do not how long Adams will be out for, especially with this being his second injury of the season.
Hopefully, he makes a smooth recovery.
