Minnesota Vikings left tackle Christian Darrisaw will undergo season-ending knee surgery due to an injury he sustained in Week 8 against the Los Angeles Rams, leaving a major gap in their offensive line. Following their 30-20 loss to the Rams, which marked their second defeat in just four days, the Vikings (5-2) are under pressure to find a solution. One recommendation is to sign former Pro Bowl left tackle Charles Leno Jr., who has extensive starting experience.
Leno, a 33-year-old veteran, previously played with the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders. Known for his reliability, he didn’t miss a single game from 2015 to 2022. Last season, Leno allowed only 34 pressures on 631 pass-blocking snaps for the Commanders, showcasing consistent pass protection. While he missed three games in 2023 due to a knee injury and family loss, he still earned a respectable 72.5 PFF grade and remains a free agent after his release in March.
Another option the Vikings could explore is reshuffling their current lineup. They could shift left guard Blake Brandel to left tackle, where he filled in for Darrisaw in 2022, and start Dalton Risner at left guard. This move, however, removes Risner as a potential replacement for the struggling right guard Ed Ingram.
Regardless of the approach, replacing Darrisaw’s All-Pro caliber play will be challenging. The Vikings’ coaching staff, which values offensive line stability, may lean toward internal adjustments, though Leno could be a valuable depth addition if available at a veteran minimum.
The Vikings could also pursue trade options before the NFL’s November 5 deadline. Potential targets include Carolina Panthers lineman Brady Christensen and Indianapolis Colts guard Will Fries. Christensen, a versatile lineman with starting potential, and Fries, currently PFF’s fourth-highest graded guard, both offer promising solutions for the Vikings’ O-line needs.
