The Las Vegas Raiders announced the dismissal of offensive coordinator Luke Getsy after nine games into the season, along with offensive line coach James Cregg and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello. All three coaches were in their first season with the team.
The Raiders, currently at a 2-7 record and sharing the worst record in the NFL, are facing a five-game losing streak, their first since 2018. Despite scoring on their opening drives in four of the past five games, the offense struggled to maintain momentum. In that same period, they managed just four touchdowns over 50 other drives, three of which came late in games when the team was trailing by 20 or more points.
Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce commented on the loss, acknowledging the need for improvement across the board. He emphasized a team effort was required to execute better and give the Raiders a chance to compete in the fourth quarter, rather than continuously trying to catch up.
Before joining the Raiders, Getsy led the top rushing offenses in the NFL as the Chicago Bears’ offensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023. However, under his guidance, the Raiders’ offense ranked 28th overall, with a 26th rank in scoring and near the bottom in rushing.
Getsy recently defended his approach to play-calling, challenging the idea of “scripted” plays, stating that they were merely strategies based on field position and game situations rather than pre-planned sequences.
Hired in February after the departure of Kliff Kingsbury, Getsy was moved from the sideline to the press box for play-calling two games ago. His departure marks the fourth time in five years the Raiders have changed coordinators or head coaches mid-season.
