Good News: Just In Former Top Experienced Superstar Return To Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals have re-signed catcher to a minor league contract for the 2025 season, as announced on the Cardinals Player Development account on X.

Sisco, who will turn 30 in February, has played five seasons in the majors but hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since 2021. Drafted by the Orioles in the second round in 2013, he advanced through Baltimore’s minor league system, performing well at each level. By 2017, Sisco was highly regarded, ranked as Baltimore’s top prospect by Baseball America, MLB Pipeline, ESPN, and FanGraphs. However, he struggled to meet expectations in the majors, hitting .197/.317/.337 over 196 games from 2017 to 2021, resulting in an 82 wRC+. Alongside his offensive challenges, Sisco’s defensive skills—particularly blocking, throwing, and framing—were also considered below-average for an MLB catcher.

In June 2021, the Orioles designated him for assignment, and he was subsequently claimed by the Mets. However, Sisco only appeared in five games for New York before being designated for assignment again in September. Over the following seasons, he moved between several teams, including stints with the Mariners and Twins minor league systems, a season in the Mexican League with the Acereros de Monclova, and a period with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League. In August 2024, Sisco signed a minor league contract with the Cardinals, after impressing with a .274/.416/.609 slash line in the Atlantic League. His short time with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds also showed promise, as he recorded five hits, including a home run, over seven games.

The Cardinals saw potential in Sisco’s recent performance, prompting them to extend his contract for another season in their minor league system, likely to provide organizational depth and a potential call-up option. In addition, the Cardinals also re-signed left-hander Packy Naughton, who announced the news on Instagram. St. Louis confirmed the return of nine other minor leaguers on contracts for 2025: pitchers Augusto Calderon, Angel Cuenca, Inohan Paniagua, Dionys Rodríguez, Victor Santos, and Leonardo Taveras; catcher Gavin Collins; infielder Ramon Mendoza; and versatile second baseman and outfielder Darlin Moquete.
