Safety Mike Edwards’ time with the Tennessee Titans has come to an abrupt end, marking his second release in just eight days. Initially joining the Titans after his release from the Buffalo Bills, Edwards is now without a team again, as announced by Titans senior writer Jim Wyatt.
Edwards, a former Buccaneers and Chiefs safety, started the season with the Bills. However, he found himself behind Taylor Rapp, Damar Hamlin, and rookie Cole Bishop in Buffalo’s safety rotation, limiting his playing opportunities. The Bills attempted to trade Edwards before the deadline but ultimately opted to release him when no trade materialized. Edwards initially signed a one-year, $2.8 million contract with Buffalo in free agency, but he saw limited action, playing just seven defensive snaps across three games in nine weeks.
Following his release from the Bills, Edwards reportedly requested the move to seek more playing time. He quickly signed with the Titans, likely as a potential replacement for starter Quandre Diggs, who was out for the season with a Lisfranc injury. The Titans’ safety lineup now includes Amani Hooker, with backups Mike Brown and Julius Wood. Brown, a third-year player, recently stepped up with increased snaps, while Wood, an undrafted rookie, has been used primarily on special teams.
Though Edwards was expected to gradually integrate into the defense, Brown started in his place as Edwards remained inactive. Today’s news of Edwards’ release from the Titans comes as a surprise, especially given he didn’t play a single snap for the team. While the reasons for his departure are unclear, Edwards will likely seek more stability in his next opportunity.
