Andy Kostka of the Baltimore Banner reports that Sherman Johnson is being promoted to the major league coaching staff by the Orioles. On the offensive end, the 34-year-old will collaborate with assistant hitting coach Tommy Joseph and hitting coach Cody Asche. This morning, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com hinted that Johnson would soon be promoted. Johnson will be joining an MLB staff for the first time. He has risen through the coaching ranks quite rapidly. As recently as 2022, he was playing professionally in the independent American Association. He played in the minor leagues for nine years after graduating from Florida State. In 2018, Johnson made a brief appearance in the major leagues while playing for the Angels. In ten at-bats, he was hitless. He was a left-handed batter who demonstrated good plate discipline.
It wasn’t until 2023 that Johnson transitioned into coaching. He was hired by Baltimore to teach batting for their Double-A team in Bowie. He worked as a minor league hitting coordinator throughout the previous season. He apparently struck up a conversation with several of the O’s prospects right away. Johnson should have the opportunity to work with Jackson Holliday, Heston Kjerstad, and Coby Mayo again at Camden Yards, where he was Bowie’s coach. A somewhat inexperienced bunch of hitting instructors has been chosen by Baltimore. After serving as Brandon Hyde’s assistant for two years, 34-year-old Asche is taking on the role as head hitting coach for the first time. The 33-year-old Joseph will begin his second season as an MLB coach. He served as an assistant with the Mariners during this season.
