The Miami Hurricanes, under head coach Mario Cristobal, scored a significant victory on the recruiting trail by flipping four-star defensive lineman Hayden Lowe, previously committed to USC. Lowe, from Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, California, is a major addition to Miami’s 2024 recruiting class while representing a notable loss for USC’s defensive efforts, which have faced challenges recently.
Lowe’s decision to join Miami was heavily influenced by the opportunity to be coached by Jason Taylor, the Hurricanes’ defensive ends coach and a former NFL star with six Pro Bowl appearances. In an interview with *On3*, Lowe praised Taylor’s unparalleled expertise and credentials. “To be the best, you have to be coached by the best, someone who’s been through it all,” Lowe said. “Nobody in college football can instill what you need better than Jason Taylor.
He’s faced the best, overcome struggles, won games, Super Bowls, and holds records. There’s no other coach who can provide that kind of knowledge.”
According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Lowe is the No. 17 edge rusher in his class, the No. 18 prospect in California, and the No. 189 overall prospect nationally. His recruitment drew interest from numerous top programs, including Alabama, Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, and Washington. This broad interest underscores his value as a prospect and the magnitude of Miami’s win in securing his commitment.
While Miami celebrates the addition, USC may face further challenges on the recruiting front. Five-star quarterback Julian Lewis, committed to USC, is reportedly planning a visit to Georgia. Lewis, a standout from Carrollton High School in Georgia, is one of the most coveted prospects in the country. Losing him would further compound USC’s struggles in retaining elite talent.
Cristobal’s success in flipping Lowe demonstrates Miami’s growing momentum on the recruiting trail, particularly with the appeal of NFL-caliber coaching like Jason Taylor’s. For USC, Lowe’s departure and potential future losses signal a need to reinforce their recruiting efforts to remain competitive. Meanwhile, Lowe’s commitment strengthens Miami’s defensive line and showcases the program’s ability to attract high-caliber talent from across the nation.
