Two former Boston Red Sox minor leaguers have found new homes in free agency. Utility player Pablo Reyes has joined the Yankees organization on a minor league contract, according to Gary Phillips of the *New York Daily News*. Meanwhile, pitcher Justin Hagenman signed a major league deal with the Mets, as announced on November 18.
Reyes, who spent time with the Red Sox from 2023 to 2024, was traded to the Mets midseason in exchange for cash considerations. During the 2024 season, he played 64 games for Boston, posting a .287/.339/.377 slash line. However, his performance dipped to a .183/.234/.217 line in 21 games following the trade. Despite these struggles, Reyes showed promise in Triple-A Syracuse, where he hit .290/.371/.493 across 63 games.
In September 2024, Reyes was called up to the Mets’ major league roster as part of expanded rosters but didn’t get any plate appearances before being designated for assignment on September 9. Now with the Yankees, he has been assigned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where his defensive versatility will be an asset. Over his six-year professional career, Reyes has started games at every position except pitcher and catcher, although he has made occasional appearances on the mound.
The Mets’ signing of Hagenman marks another move involving a former Red Sox prospect. Acquired by Boston in a mid-2023 trade that sent Kiké Hernández back to the Dodgers, Hagenman spent the remainder of 2023 and all of 2024 in the Red Sox organization. In 2024, he pitched 91.2 innings for the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox, recording a 4.91 ERA. Hagenman, who was not added to Boston’s 40-man roster, became a free agent at the end of the season and secured a major league deal with New York.
For both Reyes and Hagenman, these moves offer new opportunities to advance their careers outside the Red Sox organization. While Reyes will add depth and flexibility to the Yankees’ system, Hagenman has earned a significant opportunity with the Mets, signaling a fresh start for both players.
