COLUMBUS, Ohio — Will Howard has largely met the high expectations set for him as Ohio State’s starting quarterback, leading to a career-best season.
His completion percentage of 72.9% is 11.6% higher than his best at Kansas State. He’s already matched his career-high of 24 touchdowns from last season, while cutting his interceptions down to just five.
Though he isn’t accumulating as many rushing yards as he did with the Wildcats, his six rushing touchdowns rank second to last year’s nine, and his ability to threaten defenses with his legs remains a key asset for the Buckeyes.
Through nine games, Howard has been exactly what OSU needed: efficient in decision-making, avoiding unnecessary risks that might put the team in jeopardy, at least not in ways the rest of the squad couldn’t handle.
But after nine games, there was still one thing missing — until his performance against Northwestern.
“Throwing deep balls is throwing deep balls,” Howard said before Ohio State’s 31-7 win at Wrigley Field in Chicago. “You either hit them or you don’t.”
