Packers Re-Sign Former QB in a Surprise Week 12 Move
In an unexpected development, the Green Bay Packers have re-signed former quarterback Alex McGough, who has transitioned to playing wide receiver. This move comes just ahead of the team’s Week 12 clash with the San Francisco 49ers, adding a familiar face back to the roster in a new capacity.
McGough, who previously played for the Packers, made headlines earlier this week after working out with the New York Giants. The Giants, in search of quarterback depth after benching Daniel Jones, ultimately decided to sign another former Packer, Tim Boyle, instead. However, this opened the door for McGough’s return to Green Bay.
Once a quarterback for the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL, McGough led his team to back-to-back championships and was named the 2023 USFL MVP.
His impressive performance included completing 67.4% of his passes for 2,105 yards, 20 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, while also contributing 405 rushing yards and five rushing scores. His dual-threat abilities showcased his adaptability and athleticism, traits that likely influenced Green Bay’s decision to bring him back as a wide receiver.
McGough initially joined the Packers as a quarterback last year, serving as a backup to Jordan Love and Sean Clifford. Despite not seeing game action, his familiarity with the team and system makes him a valuable late-season addition. During this year’s training camp, he attempted to make the roster as a wide receiver but was waived due to an injury. Now healthy, he is set to rejoin the practice squad and potentially contribute in a new role.
The Packers’ decision to re-sign McGough reflects their belief in his versatility and potential to add depth to the roster during a critical point in the season. His ability to adapt between quarterback and wide receiver roles could provide unique value as Green Bay pushes toward the latter half of the schedule.
For McGough, this move offers another opportunity to showcase his skills and potentially earn playing time. Fans will be watching to see how his transition to wide receiver develops and whether his return to the Packers will make an impact on their season.
