SF Giants Add Two Pitchers to 40-Man Roster, Designate Kai-Wei Teng for Assignment
The San Francisco Giants made roster adjustments on Tuesday to protect players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft, adding pitchers Carson Seymour and Carson Ragsdale to their 40-man roster. To make room, the team designated right-hander Kai-Wei Teng for assignment.
Teng, added to the 40-man roster last offseason, struggled in his limited major league appearances. Across 11 innings, he posted a 9.82 ERA and failed to find consistency at Triple-A, where he logged an 8.60 ERA with 61 strikeouts and 44 walks over 75.1 innings for the Sacramento River Cats. Now, he awaits resolution in the next 10 days, during which he could either be claimed by another team or clear waivers.
Carson Seymour was a clear candidate for protection after a strong showing in Sacramento. In 2024, he emerged as one of the team’s most dependable pitchers, posting a 4.82 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, and a 53.5% ground ball rate over 134.1 innings. While his road stats were inflated by the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, Seymour excelled at home with a 3.92 ERA across 14 appearances at Sutter Health Park, one of the league’s more balanced venues. His ability to manage contact and keep the ball on the ground bodes well for his future.
Meanwhile, Carson Ragsdale overcame injury setbacks to impress in 2024. Starting the year in Double-A, he recorded a 3.49 ERA over 14 starts before earning a promotion to Triple-A. With the River Cats, he notched a 5.03 ERA across 13 appearances. Known for his towering 6-foot-8 frame and versatile arsenal, Ragsdale has primarily worked as a starter but could transition to the bullpen for a quicker path to contributing at the major league level. He totaled 147 strikeouts in 120.2 innings, placing him among the top 25 minor league pitchers in strikeouts last season.
Ragsdale’s repertoire includes a mid-90s fastball complemented by a slider, changeup, and a standout curveball with sharp 11-to-5 movement. While his fastball velocity isn’t overpowering, his above-average extension makes it highly effective against hitters.
By adding Seymour and Ragsdale, the Giants are bolstering their pitching depth while preparing for future contributions from two promising arms.
