2025 Kicker/Punter Cole Byrd Commits to Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech has added another standout to its storied special teams tradition with the commitment of Cole Byrd, a kicker and punter from Bassett, Virginia. Byrd announced his decision on social media Wednesday night, committing as a preferred walk-on for the Hokies.
Byrd expressed his enthusiasm for joining the program, citing the welcoming environment and focus on holistic development as key factors in his decision. “I would say that I am choosing VT because it truly feels like home,” Byrd explained. “The atmosphere and excitement about sports at Virginia Tech is surreal. It feels like the coaches truly care about your well-being, not just as a player but as a student as well. I see it as a place to not only become a better football player but to develop a great future off the field as well.”
Byrd brings an impressive resume to Blacksburg. As a senior, he tallied 32 touchbacks, converted six field goals ranging from 29 to 40 yards, made 31 of 32 extra points, and executed four successful onside kicks. His junior year was even more remarkable, as he nailed 16 field goals, including a long of 51 yards, went 29-for-29 on extra points, and recorded 40 touchbacks on 52 attempts. Byrd has also demonstrated his range with two 52-yard field goals during camps at James Madison and Tennessee.
Throughout his high school career, Byrd earned First Team All-State honors as both a kicker and punter and set his school’s record for the longest field goal with a 51-yard kick in 2023.
Byrd chose Virginia Tech over Liberty and received interest from several other schools, including Virginia, Old Dominion, Syracuse, Wake Forest, and James Madison. His decision to join the Hokies underscores his excitement about contributing to Virginia Tech’s celebrated special teams legacy.
This Saturday, Byrd plans to visit Virginia Tech unofficially for the season finale against Virginia, marking his latest trip to campus in a season filled with visits. With his commitment, the Hokies gain a talented specialist who looks forward to developing both on and off the field in Blacksburg.
