The Miami Dolphins’ Skylar Thompson era came to an end on Saturday. In a flurry of roster changes prior to Sunday’s matchup with the Houston Texans, the team cut the third-year quarterback.
The team promoted wide receiver Grant DuBose from injured reserve and added practice defensive tackle Matt Dickerson to the active roster. Long snapper Zach Triner and tackle Ryan Hayes were both added to the active roster for Sunday’s match. During his three years in Miami, Thompson played in ten games and completed 81 of 138 pass attempts, scoring one touchdown. In three games this season, he completed 21 of 33 ball attempts for a meagre 187 yards. The Dolphins continue to use Tyler Huntley as their backup quarterback due to depth concerns elsewhere, but if Thompson clears waivers, he may end up on the practice squad.
As an undrafted free agent in 2018, Dickerson started his career with the Tennessee Titans. On October 25, 2024, he joined the Dolphins practice squad. Although he hasn’t played yet this season, he recorded 15 tackles in 12 games with the Kansas City Chiefs last season. In Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills, DuBose sustained a shoulder injury after catching one of three targets this season. The Dolphins, who selected DuBose in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers, are hoping he will help improve one of the weakest special teams in the league. Triner will be called up for game day for the third time on Sunday, as players may only be promoted from the practice squad three times. Since the beginning, Blake Ferguson has completely back to back weeks Miami may be leveraging the roster spot elsewhere with Triner available.
It was believed that Hayes would be elevated because starting left tackle Terron Armstead was uncertain. Miami’s trench depth will be put to the test, particularly when facing a defence led by Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter.
