The Boston Bruins have indicated their intention to end Tyler Johnson’s contract by placing him on unconditional waivers. On Thursday, Elliotte Friedman revealed the information, emphasising that the goal is to terminate the two parties’ connection. The Bruins will be allowed to formally cut their relationship with the forward if he clears waivers, ending his contract without affecting the salary cap.
This move opens the door for other NHL teams to claim Johnson during the waiver process. That said, few, if any, teams jumped to sign him this summer. If unclaimed, he becomes a free agent, free to sign with any team.
Johnson’s future remains uncertain as a result of the Bruins’ choice. The Tampa Bay Lightning, where he had a big effect early in his career, has been mentioned by fans as a potential comeback destination. No information has been released regarding the Lightning’s interest. Others view the Buffalo Sabres as a possible destination, pointing up the team’s 11-game losing run and need for veteran depth.
Despite having a strong NHL debut, Johnson has had difficulty staying in shape in recent years. After they resolved their contract dispute with goalie Jeremy Swayman, the Bruins appeared anxious to give him a try. However, Johnson has only contributed two assists and no goals in nine games with the Bruins. Given his age and lack of output in his few minutes, the team’s choice to let him go makes sense.
