Dane Key, a wide receiver for Kentucky, declared on Tuesday that he would transfer to Nebraska. According to ESPN’s transfer rankings, Key is the sixth-ranked player overall and the second-ranked wide receiver. As they continue to assemble around rookie quarterback Dylan Raiola, coach Matt Rhule and his staff consider his transfer to be a major recruiting victory. In 2025, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound junior will play his final season as a member of the Huskers.
During his three years as a Wildcat, Key has caught 126 receptions for 1,870 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Huskers hired him away from Kentucky earlier this month, and he will be reunited with his receivers coach, Daikiel Shorts Jr. Despite switching quarterbacks during the Wildcats’ 4-8 season, Key recorded a career-high 715 receiving yards on 47 receptions in 2024. He leaves as the school’s fifth-leading receiver. Following the graduation of its top two wide receivers, Nebraska has been using the portal to find fresh playmakers to help Raiola. Nyziah Hunter, the No. 11 receiver in ESPN’s transfer rankings, is a Key and Cal transfer. Raiola has 2,595 passing yards this season, more than any other FBS true freshman quarterback.
The Huskers now have ten transfer commitments for 2025 after adding former Missouri defensive end Williams Nwaneri, who is ranked No. 13 overall in the portal. For the first time since 2016, Nebraska qualified for the bowl with a 6-6 record in Rhule’s second season. The team will play Boston College in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl on December 28 (12 p.m. ET, ABC) to finish the season.
