Sam Jackson V, a wide receiver for the Auburn Tigers, is the 18th player to declare their intention to leave the team this offseason, according to the transfer site. Jackson, a four-star quarterback in the 2021 recruiting class, committed to TCU. He transferred to Cal in January 2023 and then to Auburn in December of the same year. In 2024, Jackson grabbed two catches for 63 yards. He played quarterback for the Golden Bears in five games in 2023, rushing for 59 yards and scoring a touchdown while passing for 556 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions.
As a sophomore at Naperville Central in 2018, Jackson caught 50 passes for 847 yards and 14 touchdowns so he had experience at the position before making the change ahead of the 2024 season.
Part of the appeal of Auburn for Jackson was playing with his former high school teammate Payton Thorne, the Tigers’ starting quarterback for the last two seasons.
With a 2–6 conference record this season, Auburn came in 13th place in the SEC. In their penultimate game, the Tigers did manage to defeat then-No. 15 Texas A&M. Three quarterbacks, three wide receivers, two offensive tackles, and two tight ends will be leaving Auburn football this offseason, including Jackson. Hugh Freeze is starting his third season as head coach of the Tigers, and his record is 11-14.
