Breaking: Yankees Target Predicted to Land $34 Million Deal in MLB Free Agency

The New York Yankees are actively seeking to strengthen their infield following the departure of second baseman Gleyber Torres to the Detroit Tigers. One potential target is veteran infielder Jorge Polanco, who can play both second and third base. Polanco, recovering from knee surgery, aims to be ready for spring training. In the 2024 season with the Seattle Mariners, he hit .213 with 16 home runs. Before his knee issues, Polanco was known as a solid hitter.

Another name linked to the Yankees is Alex Bregman, a free-agent infielder who could fill the void left by Torres. Bregman is expected to command a deal worth approximately $35 million annually, potentially over seven years.

The Yankees have been active this offseason, making significant moves to bolster their roster. After losing the bidding war for Juan Soto to the New York Mets, who signed him to a record-setting contract worth up to $805 million, the Yankees quickly shifted their focus. They signed pitcher Max Fried to a historic $218 million contract, traded for closer Devin Williams, and acquired outfielder Cody Bellinger. Despite these additions, the infield remains an area of concern.

In addition to Polanco and Bregman, the Yankees have explored other options. They have checked in on players like Brendan Rodgers and Luis Arraez and could explore trades for players such as Alec Bohm and Nolan Arenado. The team is also considering internal options, though current candidates are either inexperienced or past their peak.

The Yankees’ pursuit of infield talent is part of a broader strategy to maintain their competitive edge in the American League. Despite losing key player Juan Soto and spending significantly in free agency ($235.5 million), the Yankees have strengthened their squad by acquiring talent from the National League. Concerns remain, but the Yankees’ strong financial position and strategic moves keep them as favorites in a still lackluster AL.

As the offseason progresses, the Yankees’ front office continues to explore all avenues to address their infield needs. The team’s financial flexibility and willingness to engage in both free-agent signings and trades suggest that further moves are likely before the start of the 2025 season.
