The Baltimore Ravens, currently standing at an impressive 11-3 in the NFL, are facing the challenge of retaining their standout players as the free agency market looms. Pro Football Focus (PFF) has unveiled its top 100 free agents for the upcoming 2024 class, and among them, the Ravens’ breakout defensive tackle, Justin Madubuike, holds an impressive sixth position.
Madubuike has been a pivotal force for the Ravens’ top-rated defense this season, earning recognition for his enhanced skill set and relentless pursuit on the field. PFF’s Brad Spielberger notes Madubuike’s improved arsenal of moves and a more explosive first step, positioning him for a lucrative deal in the upcoming free agency.
Ranked as the fourth-highest defender on PFF’s list, Madubuike follows stars like Chris Jones, Josh Allen, and Brian Burns. Notably, Madubuike is regarded as the second-best defensive tackle in the upcoming class, with his camp closely monitoring the market for Chris Jones to establish a benchmark.
Having recorded at least half a sack in 12 of 14 games this season, Madubuike has already doubled his prior season-high, showcasing remarkable performance. PFF draws a contract comparison to Javon Hargrave’s 2020 deal, but given Madubuike’s outstanding season, it is speculated that a more lucrative agreement will be sought.
Spotrac’s market value tool suggests a potential three-year, $55 million contract for Madubuike, comparing him to other defensive tackles like Quinnen Williams, Daron Payne, Ed Oliver, and D.J. Reader. Considering that Williams recently secured a four-year, $96 million deal with the Jets, Madubuike may aim for a comparable figure.
With three games left in the season, the former third-rounder is keen on bolstering his sack numbers to maximize his value in the upcoming free agency. Madubuike has set career highs in various statistical categories, including sacks, combined tackles, QB hits, and tackles for loss, highlighting his impact on the field.
In addition to Madubuike, the Ravens face the challenge of retaining five other players listed in PFF’s top 100 free agents. Kevin Zeitler, Jadeveon Clowney, Patrick Queen, Geno Stone, and Odell Beckham Jr. are all set to hit the free agency market. The Ravens, grappling with limited cap space, will need to make strategic decisions to retain key players and navigate the complexities of the offseason.
