Texas Rangers confirm one year deal for another top super star

The Texas Rangers have signed reliever Diego Castillo to a minor league deal, as reported by MLB Trade Rumors. Castillo was a reliable and effective reliever from 2018 to 2022, primarily serving as the closer for the Tampa Bay Rays during that period. However, his performance took a downturn in 2023, leading to a challenging season with the Seattle Mariners.

In 2023, Castillo struggled with a 6.23 ERA in 8.2 innings for the Mariners, resulting in him being outrighted off the roster in early May. He spent most of the season in Triple-A, where he continued to face challenges with a 5.13 ERA in 47.1 innings. Following the season, Castillo became a minor league free agent in October.

Despite his struggles in 2023, Castillo’s track record and past performance make him an intriguing addition for the Rangers. The minor league deal allows the Rangers to bring him to spring training without guaranteeing him a roster spot. Castillo will have the opportunity to earn a spot on the roster by demonstrating his ability to consistently throw strikes and regain his form.

This signing represents a low-risk, high-reward move for the Rangers, as they aim to bolster their bullpen depth and potentially tap into Castillo’s past success as a reliable reliever.
