Rams take play-making cornerback to replace Jalen Ramsey in latest mock

In the latest mock draft by Nate Tice of The Athletic and Yahoo Sports, the Los Angeles Rams are projected to address their cornerback position by selecting Quinyon Mitchell from Toledo with the 23rd overall pick. The move is seen as an effort to fill the void left by star cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

Tice acknowledges the overall success of the Rams’ defense in the 2023 season, crediting General Manager Les Snead for successful draft picks like linebacker Byron Young and nose tackle Kobie Turner. However, the cornerback position remains an area where opponents can exploit, prompting the selection of Mitchell, a playmaker from Toledo.

Describing Mitchell as a potential game-changer, Tice emphasizes his outstanding athleticism, burst, and ball skills. Despite playing in the MAC (Mid-American Conference), Mitchell’s talent and dominant performances are expected to elevate his draft stock.

Cornerback is identified as a key position of need for the Rams in the upcoming offseason. With limited options in the free-agent market, the draft is likely the avenue through which the Rams will address this need. Mitchell, according to Tice, would bring a playmaking element to the Rams’ secondary, an aspect they currently lack.

The report notes that Mitchell fits the mold of what the Rams typically seek in cornerbacks, citing his impressive six interceptions and 37 pass breakups over the past two years. Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 200 pounds, Mitchell offers a combination of speed (potential 4.3 speed) and size that aligns with the Rams’ preferences for their cornerbacks.

However, concerns are raised about the level of competition Mitchell faced in the MAC. The report points out a game against Ohio State last year where he allowed four receptions on four targets and a touchdown. The upcoming Senior Bowl in February is identified as an important opportunity for Mitchell to showcase his skills against higher-caliber opponents.

As the Rams approach the end of the season with a playoff push, the focus shifts to potential offseason improvements, particularly addressing the pass defense. Quinyon Mitchell emerges as a viable option for the Rams in the upcoming draft, providing a potential solution to bolster their cornerback position.
