According to sources who spoke to Football Insider, West Ham is in the process of finalizing an agreement to sign Ajax attacker Steven Bergwijn and has held preliminary discussions about the transaction.
As they expedite their preparations to sign a versatile attacker in January, it is thought that the Hammers are talking about loan and permanent agreements with the Dutch giants.
Bergwijn is “very keen” to return to the Premier League and is willing to work for David Moyes’ team, sources have told Football Insider.
A complete agreement between the clubs is still a long way off, and negotiations are still in their very early stages.
The 26-year-old has three and a half years left on his contract in Amsterdam after moving from Tottenham to Ajax in the summer of 2022 for an alleged £25.8 million.
After spending £26.7 million to join Tottenham from PSV Eindhoven, he was unable to make an impact for the Lilywhites, managing just eight goals and ten assists in 83 games.
Bergwijn has scored 24 goals and provided nine assists in 65 games since returning to his own country, however it has been more successful.
Bergwijn’s versatility as an offensive midfielder and his ability to play across the front line appeals to the West Ham management, who are looking for an attacker with multipositional skills.
It occurs when questions are raised about the futures of players like Michael Antonio, Danny Ings, and Said Benrahma.
Football Insider revealed (7 January) that the race for Benrahma could run right to the end of the January transfer window with Wolves, Fulham and Lyon all interested.
Following their 0-0 draw with Brighton on Tuesday, January 2, West Ham is currently ranked sixth in the Premier League. On Sunday, January 7, they will play Bristol City in the FA Cup.
