Report: Texas CB Ryan Watts to declare for the 2024 NFL Draft
The two-year starter is looking turning professional.
After transferring in from the Ohio State Buckeyes two seasons ago, Texas Longhorns cornerback Ryan Watts is set to declare for the 2024 NFL Draft, according to a report from Chip Brown of Horns247.
Watts was one of the first big transfer portal successes for Steve Sarkisian and his coaching staff, drawing him in from Ohio State to address a need in the secondary. The former four-star prospect from Little Elm wound up in Columbus after picking the Buckeyes over the Oklahoma Sooners, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He appeared in 19 games over his two seasons in the Big Ten as a part of the 2020 and 2021 Buckeyes teams who won conference championships and competed in the CFP.
He walked in at Texas and soon became one of the starting group of defensive backs, receiving honorable mention All-Big 12 and honorable mention Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. In his second year at Texas, he missed three games due to injury, keeping onto his status as one of the best corners in the class, but saw players like Terrance Brooks and Malik Muhammad enter into the rotation and gain more snaps as the season proceeded.
Texas will have a great core of defensive backs in the stable, with Brooks and Muhammad heading a youthful, but capable bunch as the Longhorns make the shift to the SEC. As a part of the 2024 class, Texas added elite corner Kobe Black from Waco Connally who will likely feature into the plans for the 2024 secondary as an early enrollee.
