Report: New Orleans Saints Expand Their Interview Pool with Another Highly-Touted Offensive Coordinator Prospect
According to reports, former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson is being interviewed by the New Orleans Saints for the post of offensive coordinator.
The New Orleans Saints had promised and are still providing an exhaustive search. The Saints are hoping to finalize a change in the position following the departure of Pete Carmichael, their 14-year offensive coordinator. General Manager Mickey Loomis pledged a thorough and meticulous search during this procedure.
With the addition of one new candidate on Friday, New Orleans currently has nine individuals on its interview list. The Saints will speak with Brain Johnson, the former offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, according to NFL Insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic. Monday is the scheduled interview day, preceding the Senior Bowl workouts the following week.
Johnson, who was the Eagles’ starting signal caller coach in 2022, had great success with Jalen Hurts. Just last year was his first attempt at offensive coordinator in the major leagues. With a 10-1 start, the Eagles’ 2023 season got off to an overwhelmingly fantastic start. Regretfully, the Eagles offense became stale and less inventive as the season came to an abrupt end with a 1–5 record. The Saints will need to clarify in their interviews just how much of this was on Johnson.
The fact that the Eagles’ defense finished No. 26 in total yardage and No. 30 in points allowed did not help them. Philadelphia’s offensive, ranked among the top 10, was unable to compensate for the deficiencies on the opposing side of the ball. But by the conclusion of the season, even with it, the offensive shortcomings were very apparent.
Philadelphia made the decision to part ways with Johnson and other members of the coaching staff in place of head coach Nick Sirianni. This could indicate that the coordinators were incompetent or that they were the object of the NFL’s continuous “scapegoat” policy.
A lot of people appear to think that Johnson was just operating inside Sirianni’s plan. Thus, it is a wise decision for New Orleans to interview Johnson since it will provide them an opportunity to see him as a play caller who can operate freely on the offensive end of the ball rather than having to follow orders from others.
Prior to the Eagles’ collapse, Johnson was receiving head coaching buzz while the team was dominating. He held interviews with the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons for the head coaching positions that were previously vacant, and his interview with the Carolina Panthers did not go through. He returns to the hunt for more offensive coordinator roles now, and this time, he comes prepared. which might benefit the Saints greatly if all falls into place.
