Morris Joins Two Rams Assistants on Falcons Staff
In 2023, the Los Angeles Rams surpassed all expectations. Although head coach Sean McVay’s coaching staff has garnered attention from clubs across the league, general manager Les Snead assembled a strong core of youthful talent that helped propel them back into contention. Los Angeles has now experienced a large number of staff departures over this offseason.

With Morris taking over as head coach, the Rams’ top assistant was expected to leave, and quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson was among the offensive staff members who did the same. That pattern continues on Saturday, severely decimating Los Angeles’ workforce.

According to Jourdan Rodrigue, the Rams offensive assistants KJ Black and Nick Jones were hired by the Falcons. The offensive line coaches and quarterbacks for Atlanta, Jones and Black, respectively, serve to highlight the framework McVay had constructed. Promotions have been obtained by coaches all the way down to the bottom.

Jones was a member of the league’s Diversity Coaching Fellowship and had worked with the Falcons for three years before to joining Los Angeles. Along with his coaching background, he played collegiately for the Georgia Bulldogs. In contrast, Black worked for the Rams for two years. He participated in the league’s fruitful diversity fellowship as well. Given Atlanta’s circumstances at quarterback, Black may get the opportunity to make his mark on a rookie quarterback, having worked alongside Robinson in the quarterback room. McVay should be commended for the talented team he has assembled; his other promotions are clear indicators of this. But a big part of this summer will depend on McVay’s ability to hire new coaches who complement the squad’s philosophy and ethos and work well with them as a team.

It’s important to value good mentoring, and too much staff turnover could have unintended consequences. The Rams have not yet made any announcements in this regard, although Rodrigue did mention that assistant Tim Berbenich is also going to Atlanta.
