Atlanta Braves Sign Minor League Free Agent From the Dodgers
Formerly, Ken Giles was regarded as a 100 mph closer for the Houston Astros, who won the 2017 World Series. In 2023, he made 21 appearances in minor league games with the Dodgers organization, recording a 9.50 earned run average. Giles inked a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves, according to a report published on Friday by Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
After being traded to Toronto during the 2018 season, he has had a history of injuries. Following Tommy John surgery, he missed the majority of 2020 and 2021. In 2022, he returned for five games with the Seattle Mariners. Giles has only made nine Major League appearances and eight innings of relief pitching over the last four seasons.
Over the course of eight major-league seasons, Giles made 362 appearances, recorded 115 saves, and 484 strikeouts in 355 1/3 innings. In his first two seasons with Philadelphia in 2014–2015, the right-hander made 113 appearances with a 1.56 ERA, 16 saves while stepping in as the closer, and made his MLB debut.
..Giles is a low-risk addition to the Braves’ big league camp, which has invited 60 players in total. Already, closer Raisel Iglesias serves as the cornerstone of a deep bullpen. He will be a terrific asset to the six-time NL East champs if he can get a few ticks back in his fastball.
