Falcons are “closely monitoring” Kirk Cousins’ unrestricted free agency.
The Falcons’ next offseason will be greatly influenced by the performances of Terry Fontenot and Raheem Morris at quarterback.
Something tough is being discussed within Flowery Branch. The Falcons’ executives are debating what’s best for the group both now and down the road. Options that meet the needs of striving to compete in 2024 and making an investment in the quarterback position’s long-term viability are scarce.
Of course, the draft is the ideal venue for doing that, but prospects other than Caleb Williams and Drake Maye require time to mature. Jayden Daniels is not the only rookie who I anticipate succeeding right away; C.J. Stroud is the epitome of a player who gets off to a quick start.
It’s also improbable that any of those three will be available. Bo Nix, Michael Penix, and J.J. McCarthy are the remaining players; none of them can start for the Falcons as a rookie and help them compete.
In order to assist the Falcons remain as competitive as possible in 2024 and possibly give them a chance at a franchise quarterback down the road, Justin Fields is arguably the best option.
Investing twice in the quarterback market, in my opinion, can easily address both short- and long-term needs. If one of the top three quarterback prospects isn’t available, my preference would be to draft someone like J.J. McCarthy and sign a free agent like Kirk Cousins.
In addition, Dan Graziano of ESPN recently revealed that a number of teams, including the Falcons, are “keeping a close eye on this situation” in relation to Cousins’ upcoming free agency.
Clearly, the Vikings are interested in Cousins. Although Kirk Cousins has been in Minnesota for a long time, he will be a target for every team looking to contend in 2024 that needs a quarterback.
Atlanta is another desirable landing location. The Falcons boast an intriguing offensive coach, a strong offensive line, a talented bunch of players, and perhaps most importantly, a competitive division. In addition, Kirk Cousins is related to people in the city.
In the event that Cousins becomes a free agent, the Falcons must be considered a strong contender.
