ESPN Report: Tennessee Titans Confirm In Final Stage Discussion To Re-sign Top Star To Another Contract

Report: It’s Unlikely That Derrick Henry Will Re-Sign With The Tennessee Titans
NASHVILLE — It looks like Derrick Henry’s time with the Tennessee Titans is drawing to a close. While Jeremy Fowler of ESPN says that a return is doubtful, it is not completely ruled out.

On X, the service that was formerly known as Twitter, Fowler said, “Running back Derrick Henry is unlikely to return to the Tennessee #Titans after a historic eight-year run, per sources, though the door is not completely closed.”

After a remarkable eight-year career, running back Derrick Henry is unlikely to rejoin the Tennessee #Titans, while the door is not entirely shut, according to sources.
After Eddie George’s 10,009 running yards, Henry had accumulated 9,502 yards during his career to tie for second place all-time in the Titans/Oilers franchise’s history.

As of right now, he leads the NFL in active rushing yards. Henry has also amassed 90 touchdowns in his career, tying Hall of Fame running backs Curtis Martin and Eric Dickerson for 13th place all-time.

Henry won four Pro Bowl honors, one first-team All-Pro selection, and the Offensive Player of the Year award during his eight seasons with the Titans.

Henry received criticism for his play during the Titans’ 6-11 year, but he still finished with 1,167 running yards and 12 touchdowns in 17 games. He also hauled in 28 receptions for 214 yards.

Henry’s yards after contact average of 3.32 was nearly the same as that of Christian McCaffrey, the top running back in the NFL, even though he turned 30 in 2023. Only McCaffrey had a higher overall grade (90.2), according to Pro Football Focus.

General manager Ran Carthon, new Titans coach Brian Callahan, and Henry have all expressed an openness to Henry staying during the summer.

During the NFL Scouting Combine, Carthon stated, “Derrick and I had a good conversation on the way out and he knows where we are and we know where he is.” “I believe those of you who have been here for a year or more are aware that we don’t really discuss players’ contract status in public. However, we’ll be in a good position to handle any necessary tasks. But we will speak with Derrick and his staff when those discussions are necessary.”

The NFL’s legal tampering period begins on March 11 and Henry will be permitted to speak with other teams on that date. On March 13, teams can begin signing free agents.

Henry might be able to negotiate a $10 million per year, two-year contract, according to PFF.
