Breaking News: Houston Texans Confirm The Departure of Another Top Star

49ers and Texans are trading for DT.
With only the Chargers having a bigger salary cap figure on their books, the San Francisco 49ers found themselves in one of the most difficult salary cap positions in the NFL going into this offseason.

SF had some work ahead of them as a sizable percentage of the roster, especially at the front seven defensive positions, were about to become free agents.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Niners have acquired defensive tackle Maliek Collins from the Houston Texans, so one of those replacements is on the way.

While the Texans continue to pile picks for their reconstruction, the Niners are only giving up a seventh-round pick in the trade.

The 28-year-old veteran of eight years just finished a season in 2023 with a career-high 41 tackles and five sacks.

Collins played his first four years of football with the Cowboys, then one year with the Raiders before spending three years in Houston.

The 49ers, who have already lost defensive linemen Javon Kinlaw and Clelin Ferrell to free agency, need to add Collins.

Collins will have plenty of snaps to handle in lieu of other 49ers pass rushers and linemen Chase Young, Kevin Givens, Sebastian Joseph, and Randy Gregory, who are all now eligible for free agency.

Arik Armstead, a star defensive tackle, is also expected to be released because the parties were unable to reach a consensus on a pay reduction.

With the addition of Collins, the Niners have now signed Jordan Elliott, Yetur Gross-Matos, and Leonard Floyd as their other three free agents.
