Quarterback for the Former Commanders Agrees to New Contract With Ravens: Report
Josh Johnson, a former quarterback for the Washington Commanders, has reached an agreement to play with the Baltimore Ravens for one season, as reported by Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic.
Johnson, who has played for the Ravens in the past, was with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023, the Cleveland Browns, and other teams. However, he did not see any action.
Since being drafted in 2008, Johnson has been in and out of the league. Ahead of his 38th birthday in May, he will have another chance with the Ravens.
With the Commandeers for four games in 2018, Johnson completed 52 of 91 pass attempts for 590 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions. Since 2011, he has not participated in more than four games throughout a season. In his most recent game, he made two throws for 10 yards while playing for the 49ers. In his lone 2012 game with the Browns, he did not try to pass.
The backup quarterback has accepted his position in the NFL and is aware of it.
Johnson stated, “I want to play at least until I’m 40,” as reported by Kyle Newman of The Denver Post in August 2022. “I’m taking it year by year, and after I turn forty, I’ll reevaluate. However, I’m making every effort to prolong it till then.

Johnson supported free agent Tyler Huntley and league MVP Lamar Jackson in 2023. He’ll play the same job this year, but Malik Cunningham, a second-year player, will take Huntley’s place.
Ryan Mink of BaltimoreRavens.com noted on March 14 that Cunningham was selected by Baltimore from the New England Patriots’ practice squad and saw four offensive snaps last season, all as wide receiver. As Cunningham’s quarterback skills continue to grow, Johnson would provide Baltimore a dependable veteran quarterback who could step up when necessary and be a positive role model in the classroom. Cunningham has made nine starts while participating in 39 NFL games.
Johnson has always been a professional, whether he was a member of the practice squad or had a spot on the main roster. There’s a reason he’s been allowed into the locker rooms of over ten teams.
According to a February 2024 ESPN article, Johnson would have seen regular-season action with nine clubs, tying him for the second most in NFL history, if he can make an appearance with the Ravens in 2024.
Johnson was aware of this in 2022 while he was a member of the Denver Broncos.
“My role is to be a sounding board for Russ and to make sure I’m repeating the same things in the offense, going out there and executing the offense as similarly as possible while also playing my own game,” Johnson reportedly stated, according to Newman. “It’s all about understanding that we all follow in Russ’ lead.” “I’m stuck in the here and now.”

The Commanders may use a veteran with Johnson’s level of experience in the league as they prepare to select a quarterback with the second overall choice.
According to multiple sources, the organization did sign Marcus Mariota on March 12 and now has Sam Howell on the roster.
According to The Athletic, there is some “intrigue” regarding Mariota’s signing at this point.
“Howell’s low-cost rookie contract has cap hits of $1.075 and $1.19 million through 2025,” Ben Standig, Brooks Kubena, and Randy Mueller reported in a piece published on March 12. “Washington can easily retain all three of those figures. Is Mariota’s experience more alluring as a starter than Howell’s potential if the coaches would rather bring a rookie along gradually?
