A linebacker for Tennessee football moves throughout the Volunteer state
Elijah Herring, a linebacker for Tennessee football, is one of four players from Josh Heupel’s team to join the transfer portal in the spring window. This spring, Herring was joined in the portal by cornerback Cristian Conyer, defensive lineman Camron Douglas, and cornerback Malik Ganaway.
Herring joined the transfer portal as a three-star transfer after graduating from high school as a three-star recruit. He is ranked 296th overall and as the 23rd-best linebacker in the spring portal.
As a sophomore, Herring had a lot of defensive responsibilities for the Vols. At the end of his second season on Rocky Top, he had one sack, one pass deflection, and 79 tackles. He had the option to return to Tennessee’s elite linebacker room for his junior season, but he made the decision to go via the transfer portal.
Herring discovered his new home across the Volunteer State via the gateway. He declared his commitment to the Memphis Tigers on Friday. For the next two seasons, the 6-foot-3, 238-pound linebacker may be a game-changer for the Tigers and a dominant force in the AAC.
I was a little surprised by Herring’s transfer when he logged into the site. At least it appeared like he would have played for the Vols this season, so losing him hurt Tennessee’s defensive depth and experience.
After the 2024 season with Memphis, the native of Newburn, Georgia, and a graduate of Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro, will now have experience playing in every region of the state. Herring’s pledge to the Tigers came after they defeated Colorado, and he will be the 23rd player signed by Memphis this recruiting cycle.
