**NFL News: Former Raiders Star Tight End Darren Waller Retires**
Darren Waller, the former standout tight end for the Las Vegas Raiders, has announced his retirement from the NFL, a year after being traded to the New York Giants.
Waller, who was traded to the Giants in March 2023, is retiring at the age of 31 after an injury-plagued season in New York. The Raiders received a third-round pick in exchange for Waller, which they used to draft wide receiver Tre Tucker. The trade also freed up $11.4 million in salary-cap space, allowing the Raiders to sign starting wide receiver Jakobi Meyers.
Waller’s career was significantly impacted by injuries, missing eight games in 2022 and six games in 2021. In his final season with the Raiders, he recorded just 28 receptions. Last season with the Giants, he missed five games but managed to catch 52 passes.
Before his injury struggles, Waller was a dominant player, setting a Raiders team record with 107 receptions in 2020 and recording 90 catches the previous season.
Waller’s journey to stardom was remarkable, overcoming substance abuse addiction and lengthy NFL suspensions. The Raiders discovered him on the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad in 2018, recognizing his potential during pre-game warmups.
