The Houston Astros have added depth to their organization by agreeing to terms with outfielder Cooper Hummel on a minor league contract. The deal, which was confirmed by team sources, brings another versatile and experienced player into the fold as the Astros continue to evaluate roster options for the remainder of the 2025 season.
Hummel, 29, offers positional flexibility and a disciplined approach at the plate that makes him a valuable addition to the Astros’ minor league system. Known for his ability to play both the outfield and catcher, Hummel’s versatility could provide the Astros with options in the event of injuries or slumps at the major league level. Though the deal is a minor league contract, it includes an invitation to major league spring training, giving Hummel a chance to compete for a spot with the big-league club or serve as a valuable depth option at Triple-A Sugar Land.
Originally drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 18th round of the 2016 MLB Draft, Hummel has spent time with several organizations, including the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners. His MLB debut came in 2022 with Arizona, and though his time at the major league level has been limited, he has shown flashes of potential. In his 2022 rookie season with the Diamondbacks, Hummel hit 3 home runs, collected 17 RBIs, and posted a .247 on-base percentage over 66 games.
At the minor league level, Hummel has displayed strong plate discipline, consistently drawing walks and maintaining a solid on-base percentage. In Triple-A last season, he batted .262 with a .409 OBP, 6 home runs, and 45 RBIs in 92 games. His switch-hitting ability also makes him an appealing asset, allowing for more strategic lineup flexibility depending on matchups.
For the Astros, signing Hummel is a low-risk move with the potential for solid rewards. The club has dealt with its share of injuries and roster turnover in recent seasons, and depth pieces like Hummel can play a pivotal role in maintaining continuity over the long grind of the MLB season.
