Eddie Howe reveals what he told Bruno Guimaraes to do during Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with West Ham

Had it not been for an intervention from Eddie Howe, Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes could have had a very different afternoon against West Ham.

The Magpies drew 2-2 at the London Stadium, but perhaps would have struggled to get a point had the referee not done Newcastle a favour in the first half.

 

Bruno Guimaraes was given a yellow card in the 17th minute for a foul on Emerson Palmieri. It was a cynical trip from the 25-year-old, who signed a new contract with Newcastle just 24 hours earlier.

Just minutes after his first booking, Bruno could and probably should have been given a second.

He got the wrong side of James Ward-Prowse, then lunged to win back possession and stop the counterattack. He certainly did the latter, but not the former.

 

The Brazilian was only able to scythe down Ward-Prowse, and would have been given another yellow card on another day.

We got extremely lucky, and it forced Eddie Howe to intervene.

According to the Chronicle, Howe actually had a word with Bruno following his second foul. They state that he told his number 39 to calm down, after committing two poor tackles so early in the game.

 

Howe’s words clearly had an impact. I don’t think Bruno actually committed another foul for the rest of the game.

 

After a couple of moments of madness, he was incredibly disciplined. Bruno went on to be massively influential in the game, and played an important role in Alexander Isak’s second goal.

It was Bruno’s pass that first opened West Ham up, as he switched the play over to Kieran Trippier on the right. The defender then did the rest, producing a first-time cross to allow Isak to score.

 

Bruno will know just how lucky he was against David Moyes’ side, and the West Ham faithful will be absolutely furious that they did not play against 10 men for most of Sunday’s contest.

 

But Newcastle got a slice of luck from the officials, and made the most of it. After a crazy opening 20 minutes, Bruno was cool and composed, producing a classy performance after Howe settled him down.
