Bengals Still Seeking Another Running Back, per Report

The Bengals’ backfield will see changes next season after trading veteran Joe Mixon to the Houston Texans. He will be replaced by Zack Moss and second-year back Chase Brown, with Trayveon Williams and Chris Evans also on the roster.

Bengals’ Interest in Adding a Third-Down Back

According to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, the Bengals are still looking for another running back, particularly a third-down specialist like Samaje Perine, who left for the Denver Broncos last offseason. The Bengals have yet to find a suitable replacement.

From Dehner:

“The shift from Joe Mixon to Zack Moss and Chase Brown aims to enhance explosiveness and versatility. However, the Bengals feel they need one more player for third-down situations. Moss could fill the role, but Trayveon Williams and Chris Evans need competition. Perine excelled in 2022 (and could return if Denver releases him), but the Bengals haven’t replaced him.”

It remains to be seen if the Bengals will add another back, but they still have time. Despite this, star quarterback Joe Burrow is confident in the current backfield.

“I feel really good about our backs,” Burrow said. “Chase [Brown] looks great. He’s an explosive guy who can take it to the house anytime. He’s been great catching the ball out of the backfield. He worked really hard at that, and it’s paying off. Zack (Moss) is coming in and will do a great job. He’s even-keeled, runs hard, and does his job. I’m excited to see what they bring.”

Optimism for the Bengals’ Backfield in 2024

Even without adding another back, there’s optimism about Cincinnati’s backfield in 2024. Moss had a standout season with the Indianapolis Colts, rushing for 794 yards and five touchdowns in 2023. Brown also showed significant promise as a rookie, averaging 4.1 yards per carry and catching 14 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown, averaging over 11 yards per reception. He has potential as a receiving threat out of the backfield.

We’ll see if the Bengals bring in another back or stick with their current roster for the 2024 season.
