3 Cut Candidates on 49ers’ Roster Ahead of NFL Training Camp
**RB Elijah Mitchell**:
Elijah Mitchell, a well-known name, may be on the cut bubble due to the 49ers’ loaded roster. Although he showed great promise in his rookie year with 1,100 scrimmage yards and six touchdowns, his inability to stay healthy is a concern. Over three seasons, he has only played 27 games. The 49ers have a crowded backfield led by Christian McCaffrey, with promising players like rookie Isaac Guerendo, Jordan Mason, Patrick Taylor Jr., and Cody Schrader. Mitchell’s history of injuries and the team’s depth at running back put his roster spot in jeopardy.
**WR Danny Gray**:
Danny Gray, a third-round pick in the 2022 draft, has struggled to make an impact. With only one catch for 10 yards on seven targets, his performance has been underwhelming. The 49ers’ 2024 draft picks, Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing, have further pushed Gray down the depth chart. Given his lack of production and increased competition, Gray’s chances of making the roster are slim.
**TE Cameron Latu**:
Cameron Latu, who spent the 2023 season on injured reserve due to a knee injury, also faces an uncertain future. Despite being a 6-foot-5, 244-pound tight end, his performance during training camp left much to be desired. The addition of free-agent Logan Thomas, along with the presence of star tight end George Kittle, further diminishes Latu’s prospects. He will need an exceptional training camp to secure a spot on the roster.
These three players face tough competition and significant challenges as they head into training camp, making their positions on the 49ers’ roster uncertain.
