The Toronto Maple Leafs have secured Dakota Mermis for the upcoming season, announcing a one-year contract with the defenseman on Tuesday. Valued at $775,000 annually against the cap, this agreement marks Mermis’s move to Toronto after spending the last four seasons with the Minnesota Wild.
Throughout his tenure with the Wild, Mermis primarily played for their AHL affiliate in Iowa, showcasing his skills in 47 NHL games during the 2023-2024 season. Originally from Alton, IL., the 30-year-old began his professional career as a free agent signing with the Arizona Coyotes in 2015. Over his time with the Coyotes, Mermis logged 251 games and accumulated 68 points within their farm system. He briefly joined the New Jersey Devils for the 2019-2020 season before making the switch to the Wild the following year.
Before embarking on his professional journey, Mermis excelled in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), spending four seasons with notable teams such as the London Knights and the Oshawa Generals. His final season with the Generals culminated in a memorable achievement as they claimed the Memorial Cup in 2015.
Now, joining the Toronto Maple Leafs, Mermis brings a wealth of experience and defensive prowess, poised to contribute to the team’s strategies and performance in the upcoming season.
