The St. Louis Cardinals fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 10-9 on Tuesday. During the game, standout second baseman Brendan Donovan injured his left foot. The 28-year-old remained in the game until the eighth inning, but manager Oliver Marmol removed him from Wednesday’s lineup as a precaution. Afterward, Donovan reassured reporters that he doesn’t expect to join Jordan Walker on the injured list.
Now in his fourth season with St. Louis, Donovan has been performing well. Marmol has utilized his versatility, playing him at second base, shortstop, and left field. Losing him would be a significant setback for an infield that’s already stretched thin.
According to Jeff Jones of Belleville News, Donovan expressed confidence that a trip to the IL won’t be necessary. He explained that the team’s medical staff “threw the book at it” and concluded the injury wasn’t serious, calling the IL only a “worst-case” outcome.
Although the Cardinals dropped Wednesday’s game to the Blue Jays, they remain above .500. Thanks in part to Donovan’s contributions, St. Louis holds second place in the National League Central, trailing the Chicago Cubs by five games.
St. Louis’ strong 2025 season has largely been fueled by their ability to stay healthy. With Walker being the only starter on the injured list, manager Oliver Marmol has had the advantage of a full roster to work with. Despite being the youngest skipper in Major League Baseball, Marmol has guided his team into playoff contention in a competitive National League.
However, Donovan’s foot injury may sideline him for a few games, creating a void as the Cardinals open a series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday.
While Donovan isn’t the biggest star on the roster, his steady production has played a key role in keeping St. Louis near the top of the standings. Opposing general managers may not be thrilled with the Cardinals’ success, but the team remains firmly focused on contending in 2025. Even with Donovan potentially out for a short stretch, St. Louis is just one hot streak away from taking over the division lead.
