Breaking: Speaking Ahead Of NFL Training Camp Opener GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah Confirm Two More Cut Candidates On Vikings’ Roster

**Three Vikings Players Who Could Be Cut Before NFL Training Camp**

The Minnesota Vikings face tough decisions following their training camp.

The Vikings are entering a new era without QB Kirk Cousins, who never led them far in the playoffs, prompting a change. They also lost edge rusher Danielle Hunter in free agency and have several aging veterans nearing the end of their careers. This reflects the previous regime’s team-building approach, leaving the Vikings struggling to fill roster gaps quickly.

Despite these challenges, the Vikings have some advantages. They now have rookie QB J.J. McCarthy on a cost-effective contract, and star wide receiver Justin Jefferson has signed a long-term extension. The team also added key players in free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft. However, several players’ roster spots are uncertain.

**Nick Mullens’ Roster Spot in Jeopardy**

Nick Mullens has been the Vikings’ backup QB since 2022. While capable, he isn’t considered an ideal backup. His position is threatened by the arrival of Sam Darnold and J.J. McCarthy, pushing him down the depth chart. Additionally, Jaren Hall, a developmental QB, might further limit Mullens’ role. To remain on the roster, Mullens must demonstrate his value as a mentor to McCarthy or outperform Darnold, which seems unlikely.

**Kene Nwangwu at Risk Due to New Kickoff Rules**

The NFL’s new XFL-style kickoff rules for 2024 could impact Kene Nwangwu, primarily a kick returner and special teamer for the Vikings. These changes might lead teams to use key offensive players for kick returns, reducing the need for core special teamers. Nwangwu hasn’t shown much promise as a running back, making his roster spot vulnerable if others excel in the return game.

**Patrick Jones II Faces Tough Competition**

Patrick Jones II, a 2021 third-round pick, hasn’t made a significant impact on the Vikings. With the team adding Andrew Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard in free agency and drafting Dallas Turner, Jones faces stiff competition. Competing with Andre Carter II, Bo Richter, and Gabriel Murphy for backup edge rusher roles, Jones’ lack of remaining contract years could also work against him. Despite logging 66 tackles and five sacks in his career, Jones’ future with the Vikings is uncertain.
