With the trade deadline approaching, the Yankees must make some tough decisions, particularly when it comes to bolstering their infield. Their current starters are underperforming both offensively and defensively, making Jonathan India a potential key acquisition if the Reds are willing to part with him.
Jonathan India: A Potential Game-Changer for the Yankees
At 27 years old, Jonathan India still has several years of team control remaining before he becomes a free agent in 2027. This season, he has a .272/.380/.401 batting line, with five home runs and 34 RBIs. While his power numbers are not as high as they were during his 2021 rookie season, when he hit 21 home runs, he has been improving his contact quality.
India is a reliable second baseman, with 600.2 innings at the position this year, though he has posted -10 defensive runs saved and two outs above average. His defensive performance might not be perfect, but it is comparable to Gleyber Torres, who has also had his share of defensive issues.
Statistical Strengths: India’s Impressive Metrics
India excels in several advanced metrics, ranking in the 95th and 100th percentiles for launch angle sweet-spot and chase rate, and in the 94th percentile for batting run value. Although his current power numbers are modest, he makes consistent, high-quality contact. Notably, he is hitting .346/.439/.558 with runners in scoring position, including two home runs and 30 RBIs in 66 plate appearances. India’s performance suggests that he could be a strong lead-off option for the Yankees, especially given Anthony Volpe’s recent struggles.
What About Gleyber Torres?
The main question for the Yankees is what to do with Gleyber Torres. General manager Brian Cashman might consider trading Torres for pitching help, as it seems unlikely the Yankees will re-sign him for a new deal given his inconsistent performance and current subpar season. This period of poor form could be an opportunity for the Yankees to showcase Torres’s talent to other teams before he hits free agency.
A Strategic Approach: Addressing Infield Needs and More
While India would provide an immediate upgrade at second base, the Yankees also have a pressing need at third base, with DJ LeMahieu struggling since returning from a foot injury. The trade market offers limited options for third base, so the Yankees might focus on securing India as a second baseman and use Torres as trade bait to find additional bullpen support.
