Texans Re-Sign DE Jerry Hughes
Jerry Hughes, who has been with the Texans for the last two seasons, will continue his tenure into 2024. This extension was first reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC2. Hughes started his career with the Colts for two seasons, then had a nine-year stint with the Bills. During his time in Buffalo, the 35-year-old defensive end made 127 starts in 144 games, achieving double-digit sacks twice and remaining a consistent and durable performer. He joined the Texans in 2022 on a two-year, $10 million deal.
Hughes had an impressive first season in Houston, recording nine sacks, his highest since 2014, demonstrating his potential as a starting player even late in his career. However, the Texans drafted Will Anderson with the No. 3 pick in the 2023 draft, pairing him with Jonathan Greenard in the starting lineup.
This led to a significant decrease in Hughes’ playing time. The TCU alum played just 42% of defensive snaps last season, the lowest of his career, yet he still managed 32 tackles, three sacks, and one forced fumble, participating in all 19 of the team’s regular and postseason games. A similar role is expected for Hughes in 2024, who has only missed multiple games in a season twice.
With Greenard leaving in free agency, the Texans signed former Vikings Pro Bowler Danielle Hunter to a lucrative deal. Hunter will take on a starting role opposite Anderson as the Texans aim to improve on last year’s sack total (44, 17th in the league). Hughes will again play a supporting role as he enters his 15th NFL season.
