Sunderland could be open to re-sigining Amad Diallo on loan from Manchester United in the January transfer window.
That’s according to a report from iNews, who say that the two clubs have formed a strong relationship in recent times.
How did Diallo do during his last spell with Sunderland?
Diallo, of course, had a fantastic loan period with the Black Cats during the 2022/23 season, after an unimpressive spell with Rangers in the second half of the previous season.
The winger scored 14 goals and supplied four assists in 42 appearances for the Black Cats in all competitions during his time at The Stadium of Light.
That saw him help the club to the Championship play-offs, where they missed out on promotion after defeat to Luton in the semi-finals, while he was also named Sunderland’s Young Player of the Year.
Has Diallo kicked on since his Sunderland loan spell?
Unfortunately for the winger, things have not gone as planned since his return to Old Trafford in the summer.
Because of a knee injury sustained during pre-season, the 21-year-old has yet to make a competitive appearance for United this season.
However, it seems there is a way that could open up the possibility of a return to Sunderland for Diallo, come the turn of the year.
Could Sunderland re-sign Diallo in January?
With Diallo nearing the conclusion of his rehabilitation period, the winger will need to begin regaining match fitness in the near future.
According to the most recent update, Sunderland would be happy to bring the Ivory Coast international back to the club on loan in January in order to give him the playing time he requires.
Sunderland and Manchester United are considered to have formed a solid friendship in recent times, which might help them close this deal.
Indeed, the Black Cats have apparently also built a reputation for developing young players recently, which may also aid their case here.
Where are Sunderland in the Championship?
Sunderland have had a solid start to the season as they try to mount another promotion bid.
The Black Cats are presently fourth in the Championship, having collected 19 points from 11 league games this season.
Tony Mowbray’s side will return to action after the international break on the 21st October, when they make the trip to Stoke City.
Would Diallo be a good signing for Sunderland this season?
If the Black Cats can pull this off, it appears to be a really nice piece of business for them.
Diallo was a vital role in Sunderland’s drive to the top six last season, and given that they are making a similar push for the top six this season, having the United winger to assist them would be a huge boost.
Indeed, given his performance for the Black Cats last season, you get the impression this would be a tremendously popular move at the Stadium of Light.
Add in the fact that it would help Diallo get the game time he needs to get back up to speed in the game, and this could be a deal that works well for all involved.
