**Mavs Acquire Klay Thompson in Historic 6-Team Trade**
The Dallas Mavericks have completed a sign-and-trade deal to acquire five-time All-Star guard Klay Thompson from the Golden State Warriors. This move marks the league’s first-ever 6-team transaction.
In this deal, the Warriors receive two second-round draft picks for Thompson, while the Charlotte Hornets take back Dallas shooting guard Josh Green to help facilitate the trade. The deal also includes sign-and-trade moves involving Kyle Anderson and Reggie Jackson.
The 6-team trade breakdown is as follows:
– **Mavericks receive:** Klay Thompson, 2025 second-round pick
– **Timberwolves receive:** 2025 second-round pick, 2031 second-round pick swaps, cash considerations
– **Warriors receive:** Kyle Anderson, Buddy Hield
– **Nuggets receive:** Cash considerations
– **Hornets receive:** Josh Green, Reggie Jackson, 2029 second-round pick, 2030 second-round pick
– **76ers receive:** 2031 second-round pick
Thompson was integral to Golden State’s championships in 2015, ’17, ’18, and ’22 and their NBA Finals appearances in 2016 and ’19. In the 2023-24 season, Thompson averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, shooting 43.2% overall and 38.7% from three-point range. However, it was the first season since 2013-14 where he played 70 or more games and didn’t average at least 20 points per game.
Thompson ranks sixth on the NBA’s all-time list for three-pointers made with 2,481, trailing Reggie Miller, Damian Lillard, James Harden, Ray Allen, and his former “Splash Brother,” Stephen Curry.
In a heartfelt message, Thompson thanked the Bay Area and the Warriors organization for his time there, expressing gratitude for the friendships and experiences that will last a lifetime. The Warriors also released a statement praising Thompson’s contributions and hinting at the future retirement of his jersey.
Josh Green, who has spent all four of his NBA seasons with the Mavericks, averaged 8.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists this past season.
For the Mavericks, who made a standout playoff run in 2024 reaching the NBA Finals, the addition of Thompson aims to improve their 3-point shooting, which faltered in their series against the Boston Celtics. Thompson, though not the player he once was due to injuries, still offers significant value and is expected to bolster Dallas’s offensive versatility alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
The trade marks a new chapter for Thompson, who expressed a desire to remain a Warrior for life but ultimately parted ways with the team. Despite recent struggles, Thompson’s legacy and impact on the Warriors’ dynasty are firmly cemented.
