Derrick Jones Jr. explained his decision to leave the Dallas Mavericks for the Los Angeles Clippers. Despite fans’ disappointment, Jones Jr. saw a leadership opportunity with the Clippers. The Mavericks had a busy offseason, including signing Naji Marshall from the New Orleans Pelicans after it became clear Jones Jr. wouldn’t return. Jones Jr. signed a 3-year, $30 million deal with the Clippers.
At the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Jones Jr. shared his reasons for joining the Clippers: “I talked to the ownership, the front office, and the coaching staff. They wanted me to fill that 3/4 role, be aggressive offensively, and maintain my defensive presence. Their goal is to win a championship.”
The Clippers had to adjust after losing Paul George to the Philadelphia 76ers. They brought in Jones Jr. and Nic Batum and re-signed James Harden. After a first-round playoff loss to the Mavericks, many expected minor changes, but George’s contract demands led to his departure.
Dallas offered Jones Jr. a similar contract to Marshall’s 3-year, $27 million deal. Despite earning less after taxes, Jones Jr. saw a clearer starting path with the Clippers. The Mavericks’ additions of Klay Thompson and Marshall made his starting position uncertain. Jones Jr. had a strong playoff performance for the Mavericks, with his defense and shooting standing out, although his shooting cooled off in the NBA Finals.
