The New York Yankees are in a postseason position going into the All-Star break. But with the Baltimore Orioles leading them in the American League East, they must improve their offense by the trade deadline of July 30. Is Miami Marlins player Jazz Chisholm Jr. a legitimate target?

As per MLB.com, the Yankees have three top-10 prospects in their system: Selvidge (10th), Lombard Jr. (sixth), and Pereira (fifth). Pereira may have an immediate impact in the major leagues. Longer-term plays are Lombard Jr. (Single-A) and Selvidge (Double-A).
According to Spotrac, Chisholm will earn $2.625 million in 2024 and will be managed by the team until 2026.
The Yankees Have Talked About Chisholm Trades
One of MLB’s clear sellers before the trade deadline is the Marlins. With a 33-63 record going into the All-Star break, they have already sent Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres in early May.
Additionally, according to Craig Mish of the Miami Herald, there is a “growing belief” that Chisholm may soon play somewhere else, as of July 8. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, New York seems to have only one suitor.
Heyman stated, “The Marlins’ talented outfielder-turned-infielder, Jazz Chisholm Jr., has been discussed by the Yankees.” “The Yankees need Chisholm to play largely infield, although the amount of his interest is unknown.”
Chisholm has made 393 plate appearances this season, batting.249/.321/.407 at bat. Along with that, there are 12 doubles, 12 home runs, 42 RBI, 41 runs scored, and 18 steals. Since his debut full big-league season in 2021, he has established himself as a reliable threat at the base. Twice, in 2021 (18 home runs and 23 steals) and 2023 (19 home runs and 22 steals), Chisholm has almost missed posting a 20–20 campaign.
He has spent almost all of his defensive playing time in center field, but he recently resumed playing second base. He could be installed in the Bronx by the Yankees to replace the underwhelming Gleyber Torres in 2024.
How Chisholm Could Assist New York in Challenging Juan Soto
Chisholm is a flexible position player who might be a valuable asset to several competitive clubs. However, how might this kind of signing aid the Yankees in their future efforts to sign outfielder Juan Soto this winter?
After this season, Torres will be free to sign with any team. The Yankees would have a multi-year option at second base without having to shell out a lot of cash if they added Chisholm to the team.
